Frequently Asked Questions

Can you tell me more about Russell Cattle Company?

Established in December 2015, Russell Cattle Company, LLC is owned and managed by B.J. and Sharah Russell along with two little helpers, Huck (4), and Bowen (1). We live in Loma, CO, where we farm/ranch 150 acres for our cattle operation. We are 5th generation cattle ranchers and we run 50 cow/calf pairs in conjunction with our families 150 cow/calf pair operation. We specialize in raising Simmental/Angus cattle with superior bloodlines known for excellent grade quality.

Our cattle spend most of their lives on pasture in our Blue Mesa high country location near Gunnison, CO. At our Blue Mesa location they enjoy 3,000 acres of prime high country grass and clear mountain fresh spring water. They spend the remainder of their lives in our lower valley pastures in Loma, CO until we move them to our feedlot facility in Loma to finish them on corn silage, alfalfa, and ground corn for the final 90-120 days. This final period of finishing ensures you, the consumer, will get a healthy, top quality product.
A little bit about us……..

B.J. is a graduate of Colorado Mesa University with bachelor’s degrees in Business Management and Marketing.  Sharah is also a graduate of Colorado Mesa University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management.  B.J. and Sharah have been raising their own cattle since they received their very first pair of pregnant heifers as a wedding present in June 2007. Over the past 9 years the herd has grown substantially and now they are excited to start providing locally raised beef to the community.

We have lots of friends in surrounding areas that offer top quality products that we would like to partner with eventually so stay tuned.  In addition to this we will also begin to offer Suffolk Lamb and pork options hopefully by the end of the year. Our goal is to promote Colorado agriculture and do our best to provide products that are “Colorado’s Finest”.

Our first official delivery was in early April 2016 and we’ve been delivering every week since!

Are you Organic?

No, we are not organic.  We do however follow some organic methods.  For example, we do not give our animal’s growth hormones or unnecessary antibiotics and we raised them from start to finish so we offer full traceability and transparency. We give our cattle free choice feeding, which means they have a feed bunk that has a mixture of corn, hays, and minerals that they can eat from. They also have access to pastures where they can graze at will.

What does Certified Organic mean?

  • Cattle can be grain-finished or grass-finished, as long as the feed is 100% organic
  • No growth promoting hormones
  • No antibiotics
  • Must be certified Organic by USDA

Do you use Growth Hormones?

No, our cattle do not get any growth hormones. Plus our cattle only receive antibiotics when they are sick and absolutely need them and in that case they are not used until they are deemed healthy again and the antibiotic withdrawal time frame has lapsed.

Who do I contact if I have a product problem?

If you have any questions or concerns at any time please feel free to contact B.J. or Sharah at 970-250-8847 or 970-640-3609, or email us here.

What is the cost to have home delivery?

We charge a $6.00 fee for any deliveries within Mesa County. This cost covers the vehicle and driver to get our products to your doorstep.

How often do you deliver?

We deliver once a week. Orders that are placed by midnight on a Friday will be delivered by the next Friday at the latest.

What time of day should I expect my delivery?

We deliver all throughout the day. Deliveries can occur as early as 7:00am and as late as 8:00pm. It all depends on how many deliveries we have each day and where we are headed. You can always email or call us if you have any specific questions or concerns.

What if I am not home when the delivery comes?

We are able to deliver without you being home. All we need is access to your freezer or a cooler with plenty of ice in a shady spot. Due to liability issues, it is our preference to not enter a customer’s house.

Please note if you do not leave a cooler with ice out, your driver will not be able to leave your delivery unless you have made prior arrangements. This helps to ensure our products don’t spoil in the summertime heat.

Please note if we make a delivery and you do not have a cooler out and we are then unable to make your delivery we will charge a $10.00 missed delivery fee.

What is a standing order?

A standing order means you have placed an order for items you would like delivered on a reoccurring basis. A standing order can be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, etc.  We highly recommend setting up a standing order as this will ensure you always have the beef you need. Plus you can make changes to the standing order as often as you like. Not to worry though, this is not required.  If you prefer you can certainly just place orders one at a time.

What if I don’t want an order this week or need to make a change to a standing order?

If you have placed a standing order, the same order for each week, and you decide you don’t need an order please email us and we will not deliver that week. If you need to make any other changes to a standing order feel free to let us know about that any time as well.  If email is not preferred you can also call us at 970-250-8847 or 970-640-3609.

Are there any times or days that you do not deliver?

We don’t typically deliver on Saturday’s or Sunday’s nor do we deliver on the major holiday’s such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day.

What is the difference between grain-finished and grass-finished?

Grain-finished cattle spend most of their lives grazing on pasture, then spend 4-6 months in a feedlot. They are fed a scientifically and healthy balanced diet of grains, such as corn, wheat, or soybeans and they have continuous access to clean water and room to grow and roam.

Grass-finished cattle spend their entire lives grazing on pasture and have continuous access to clean water and room to grow and roam. Grass-finished beef may have a distinctively different taste from grain-finished beef.

Is your beef natural?

Our beef is natural however it is not certified through the USDA yet. Naturally raised cattle can be grain-finished or grass-finished, have never received antibiotics or growth promoting hormones, and have no preservatives.

How do I pay?

We accept checks, cash, debit cards and all major credit cards. On our website you can pay through our credit card portal otherwise you can pay with any form of payment in person. Please note all returned checks are charged a $30 NSF fee.  If you will not be present when the delivery is made please put your payment in a water proof envelope or baggie and place it in your cooler.  We will pick it up when we leave your delivery.   Otherwise other prior arrangements can be made as well.
